From the first dots to painting of objects within a year

Dario was born in Berlin on October 2, 2001.  This page documents his painting:from the first dots to the painting of objects. Painting sessions were generally done in company with  MIM (Dario's mother). During painting care was taken that Dario did indeed paint the whole picture by himself. If he asked for help, MIM would only draw for him on a seperate paper. At first the paper was taped to a table, later, Dario painted using a clipboard.

14 month old Dario enjoys making dots on paper using crayons.

16 month old Dario is making lines in addition to dots.

16 month old Dario can draw with both hands at the same time. Most often, his right hand soon drops out, and Darios attention fully focusses on his left hand. Already at this age it becomes apparent that he will be left-handed.

16 month old Dario loves to paint "Krickel-krackel" with a lot of different colours.

One and a half a year old Dario already knows numbers. At that day he found out that he can draw a 1.

One and a half year old, Dario starts drawing circles.

The circles soon become spirals.

Dario finds a way of drawing lots of 1s at the bottom of the page.

19 months old: multiple circles in all colours.

The circles are called balls by Dario. Seperate balls can be distingushed. Dario is drawing real objects. At the same time differing colors become less impornant. In fact Dario prefers to draw all his pictures in red.

Dario knows how to draw single circles. Lots of his balls on this drawing.

Dario has discovered how to draw cars. A rooth (circle segment) with a wheel at each end.

Dario calls out what he is painting. Several balls, a circle, a leaf, a boat, a car, a 1, something green. I wrote it next to the specified objects as soon as he was done painting them.

Often, when starting off whith a new sheet, Dario likes to put circles around the punch holes (if there are any). Then, cars are most interesting to paint. I count about 6 on there.

20 months old: Darios first painting of a face.

More cars. For some reason they are oriented pointing upwards. Probably, they are easier to paint that way. Note that a secods set of brown wheels is added later onto the green cars.

21 Months old: Darios favorite color has become brown. More cars and some other non-identifiable stuff. He will paint 10 paintings in a row, all in brown. Offers to use a different color are pushed away.

Another face, this time even with a nose.

During July Dario insists more and more that I should paint
Hammers for him.

I have to paint at least 1000 Hammers in all kinds of Orinetations
and shapes. Then one day...

... Dario starts to paint hammers himself. In addition there is a train at the bottomn of the page.

And now Hammers is it! Also, other colors are welcomed again.

Dario loves all kinds of tools. 22 month old Dario starts painting saws.

Besides some hammers and a spiral: A car that really looks like a car at the bottomn right!

Another face: This is supposed to be Mama!

Hammers still occupy Dario a lot. They get attributes: pointy, broken, short, fixed. Two of his hammers get a little ball attached to their ends. The saw is bent and filled in.

Time for new techniques:  This is one of Darios first try with acryl colour. He is painting something easy: hammers.

And some more hammers, the orange one nice and pointy.

Compare with the car from August 2: Another beautiful one got painted here in the middle. At the top, there is another train.

These are Darios first trees. He copied them from a painting I did of a tree tilted to the left. This is why his 3 trees are also tilted. The dots are supposed to be leaves.

Dario is almost 2 years old now. Here is his first truck on top, together with a train (middle) and some balls sourounding the punchholes.

Dario has studied my paiting of a long stair. Now he is painting stairs as well. Then, without much thought for dimensions, he adds a saw and a hammer.

One day before his second birthday, Dario paints his first sun.

Dario is sometimes using water colors, now. The object to the right is meant to be a saw. He often prefers his favorite color, brown, again.

This is supposed to be a child.

Dario loves trains. Here he paints two of them next to each other. Although his experience of trains should include more than just a row of wheels, he still paints trains in a symbol-like way similar to the first tarin he ever painted. He surprises me by saying that the rain-like lines on top are supposed to be sunshine.

Dario has started to paint ladders. And hammers are always easy, so he adds 2 just for the fun of it.

Painting with acryl colors for a change. Dario copies some of my trees (a whole forest of trees). For some reason Darios trees are tilted again, like his first trees.

Also with watercolors, Dario paints nice ladders.

Dario still likes tools a lot. This is his first wrench.

Dario gets the idea of painting a cactus. He makes me paint one, too, and then copies my painting.

Dario is only a little more than 2 years old. I have to paint a lot of trees for Dario. Here is a good one painted by him, with leaves in fall colors. Some of the yellow leaves are lying on the ground.

Darios imagination sometimes goes beyond what he is capable of painting. Sometimes he paints objects like these and states that they are supposed to be a dogs or a cat.

Within a year Darios painting has evolved from more or less random dots to painting of several different objects, also using more advanced techniques like watercolor and acryl. His skill has increased gradually, along with his ability to interpret his own paintings. This gradual development of painting skill is most likely an evolution that every child goes through, especially the development of painting a circle, as well as the ability to paint single objects and to name them. What will differ between different children is the age when they will start painting objects, as well as their preference of which objects to be painted. Most kids will be able to paint a circle with the age of 2. Dario was about half a year earlier with that, probably due to his great interest in painting as well as my willingness to paint with him every time he likes to do so. Let's hope that he will keep it up!
