MIM - About Myself
On May 29, 1970
I was born in Darmstadt, Germany
to
my parents, Sturmhild and Wolfgang Moré as second of 3 children.
I grew up and attended
primary
school in the village of Gundernhausen (now part of Rossdorf) in
southern
Hessen. In 1980 my father was appointed professor of electrical
engineering
at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg, so we moved to the
village
of Wohltorf
situated near Hamburg, close to the Saxonian Forest. I attended
school in a neighbouring village,
Wentorf,
graduating with a high school degree in 1989. These nine years
certainly
were a challanging time for me.
As for art, I mostly enjoyed art lessons at school, even though the
topics
we had to draw or paint, still lives mostly, were sometimes boring.
However, the basic techniques were taught, as well as some
understanding
of what art is about. In addition I once attended an art class at
evening
college. But I mostly owe my interest in art as well as a lot of helpful
advice and
encouragement
to my
mother, a talented artist and teacher.
As for music, I have always loved classical music. Until the age of 15
I listened to nothing else. Later I discovered the beauty of
other
styles, my favourites being rock, metal, techno, and new age type
pieces.
I learned how to play the flute, and even joined a local orchestra for
a while. I sang in the school choir, as well. But my
favourite
instrument remained the piano, and now my keyboard. Although I
took
piano lessons for a long time, I always found it hard to read notes
fluently.
In general I would memorize a piece and then play it by heart.
Soon
I started improvising and even recorded some of my creations on CD.
As for other activities, I
was member of the scouts, and went on many hiking and camping trips
with
them. I have always loved nature.
As for my relation to my family, I have always been on
excellent
terms with them, and often spent a great time with them while I was
living at home.
In fall 1989, I started studying Biology in Hamburg. After 3
terms I moved to a student's home in Hamburg-Othmarschen. My 3
years
as undergraduate were a wonderful time. I immediately found some
excellent
friends. I also joined a fantasy roleplaying group, as well as a
medieval
group. Biology was a fascinating subject. I attended a lot of
very
interesting lectures and lab classes and studied hard for my exams.
Soon,
I decided that I wanted to go abroad: I applied for and sucessfully
received
a one-year Hamburg-Cornell direct exchange fellowship, as well as a
Fulbright
travel grant. So after obtaining the German Vordiplom degree in
spring
1992 (a bit like Bachelor of Science), I continued studying
Microbiology
at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, starting fall 1992. First
I did a rotation in Prof. Dr. Steve C. Winans' lab, followed by a
rotation
in Prof. Dr. William C. Ghiorse's lab, resulting in my first scientific
publication
- on the isolation of bacterial DNA from soil samples. In summer 1993,
I
attended
a class on microbial diversity in Woods Hole. My one-year fellowship
implied
my subsequent return to Hamburg. However I accepted Prof. Dr. Steve
Winans'
offer to stay in his lab in order to continue the graduate programme.
My
research
during the next four years concentrated on the transcriptional
regulation of the
conjugal transfer genes of Agrobacterium tumefacies Ti plasmids
and of an IncN plasmid of enteric bacteria. Especially during the first
half of my graduate studies, I also attended many lectures on
microbiology
and molecular biology. During
all this
time I found out that I greatly enjoyed scientific research, especially
if the experiments were working. I completed my
dissertation with a Ph.D. in microbiology in January 1997.

During my 5 years in Ithaca, NY, I moved a few times. I vey much
enjoyed living with the Scientific
Society, a graduate co-op in collegetown. A lot of my free time was
devoted
to the Ithaca SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) group, the
Dominion
of Myrkfaelinn. For the last two and a half years I was leading
the
group as their Seneschal. I have a lot of wonderful memories of
numerous events
that
we attended and organized.
In Fall 1997, I moved back to Germany, to work in the lab of Prof. Dr.
Fritz
Rathjen
at the MDC in Berlin as a post-doc on a project in developmental
neuroscience. The work there was very interesting and led to some
important scientific results. 2004 - 2005, I worked part-time as
teacher in a teaching lab for upper level high school students
(Gläsernes Labor, Campus Berlin-Buch), teaching molecular biology.
Currently, I am senior consultant in the regulatory affairs department
of
the company analyze & realize a.g. in Berlin-Hermsdorf. I am mostly
involved in the writing of regulatory documents like dossiers for
herbal medical products, or medical publications.
I got married in June 2000. On October
2nd, 2001, our son Dario
Mavin was born. On May 3rd, 2004 our son Elrik
Ingo
followed. On September 23, 2007, our daugter Sylvia Yvonne was born.
With three little kids to take care of, I find
much less time for art, but
still
I wouldn't want to miss the wonderful experience of being a mother.
People sometimes ask me when I started to paint. I keep telling
them
that I have been painting since I was able to hold a pencil.
Throughout
my life art has continued to be very important to me. Moreover,
I find that art is not only meant for the artist, but can also be
inspiring
to others. I hope that my site is a gratifying experience for you.
Thank you for visiting my
art
gallery.
